The initial novel therapies for gonorrhoea in decades are being hailed as a "significant breakthrough" in the battle against drug-resistant strains of the infection, according to scientists.

An International Challenge

The sexually transmitted infection are increasing worldwide, with figures suggesting more than 82 million new cases each year. Especially elevated rates are seen in Africa and countries within the World Health Organization's Western Pacific region, which includes China and Mongolia to New Zealand. Within England, cases have hit a record high, while figures across Europe in 2023 were significantly elevated compared to figures for 2014.

Two New Drugs Receive Approval

Zoliflodacin, also known as Nuzolvence, was authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration in recent days for combating gonorrhoea. This STI can lead to major issues, including the inability to conceive. Experts believe that specific application of this new drug will help hinder the spread of drug resistance.

Another new antibiotic, created by the pharmaceutical company GSK, was also approved in close succession. This treatment, which is employed against UTIs, was proven in research to be effective against drug-resistant strains of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

A Novel Partnership

This new treatment emerged from a unique collaborative effort for medication research. The non-profit organisation Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership partnered with the pharmaceutical company its industry partner to bring it to fruition.

Research Study Data and Worldwide Availability

As per data published in a major medical journal, zoliflodacin successfully treated over nine in ten of genital gonorrhoea infections. The study included hundreds of volunteers from several countries including Belgium, the Netherlands, South Africa, Thailand and the US.
